18 office pods, 90 reams of copy paper, 42,371 hand folded paper airplanes. Paper A+Airplanes is many things. It started as a simple question, “What if we covered all of the office pods in the architecture building with paper airplanes?” After some quick math, we soon realized that it would be an impressive amount of paper required to pull off such a stunt which is when the team had to be assembled. Led by Parker Greene and myself, 20 of us took on the task of secretly assembling 42,371 paper airplanes. This is when the project became about the people. The beauty of people coming together to complete the same mindless task thousands of times and conversing.

The placement of the paper airplanes on the roof of the office pods also became part of this projects identity. The offices themselves are provocative and alluring in the ways that they cantilever out into the space. Likewise, there are many beautiful aspects of the Art + Architecture building at the University of Tennessee but it is undoubtedly aging and it is beginning to show. By placing the installation on the roof of the office pods, we are creating a landscape of radiant white that brightens and renews the spirit of the floating pods. This installation also produced many models and documents which were displayed in a gallery show calley Paperwork. All of the materials used in this project have been re-purposed or recycled.
